Mrs. Catherine Elizabeth Miller Heaggans, of 105 Glaspy Road, Statesville, passed away at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte on Friday, May 5, 2017, following an extended illness. She was born in Rowan County on May 27, 1935, and was the daughter of the late Elmer Oscar Miller and Mable Glaspy Wilson Miller. She was married to Rufus Jerome Heaggans, Sr., who preceded her in death. Three brothers, William O. Miller, George Miller and Everett J. Miller and a sister, Novolya Miller, also preceded her in death.
She attended the Rowan County Schools and at an early age attended Smith Chapel and later Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church. In the early 1980’s she joined Antioch Baptist Church where she served on the Kitchen Committee, the Senior Choir and the Senior Missionary. She was also a member of the Bristol Road Senior Citizens and the Amity Hill Spirit.
She leaves to remember her life, four sons, Derrick Arnold Heaggans of Cleveland, Wilford J. Heaggans of Statesville, Leonard A. (Mary) Heaggans of Troutman and Rufus J. (Annette) Heaggans, Jr. of Statesville; three daughters, Beverly T. Heaggans of Charlotte, Lesia (Curtis) Pearson and Sylvia H. (Zollie) Young, both of Statesville; one sister, Patricia M. Walls of Statesville; eleven grandchildren, Thurston Heaggans of Statesville, Thurmond Heaggans of Salisbury, Rodney Wilson of Columbia, S. C., Wilford (Kisha) Heaggans, II of Mooresville, Detrick D. Heaggans of Concord, David Jones, II, Alexandria Heaggans, Nikki (Cameron) Vines, and Nicholas Ramsey, all of Statesville, Jeremy Heaggans of Charlotte and Rahim Pearson of Wilkesboro; sisters-in-law, Dorothy (Joseph) Heaggans, Melzetta Heaggans, Onevva Heaggans, Gladys (George) Stevenson, Vernie (John) Smith, Alfredia (Robert) Blackwell, Elizabeth Miller and Velma Heaggans, all of Statesville; special friends, Ada Graham, Joanne Tucker, Ruth R. Rankin, Elaine Grant and Rachel Sherrill; twelve great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, Antioch Church family, neighbors and friends.
Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Thursday, May 11, 2017, at 1:30 p.m. at Mt. Tabor Presbyterian Church in Cleveland. Reverend Timothy Porter will officiate and Rev. David Leaven will eulogize. Mrs. Heaggans will remain at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home until taken to the church to lie in state at 11:30 a.m. Members of the family will receive friends at the church from 12:00 noon until 1:30 p.m., (one and one half hour prior to the service.) Burial will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.
