Obituary for Sylvia Summers
Mrs. Sylvia Rosetta Stevenson Summers, 75, of 214 North Patterson Street, Statesville, passed away at the Gordon Hospice House, Statesville, on Tuesday, May 23, 2017, following an extended illness. She was born in Iredell County on February 19, 1942, and was the daughter of the late William Henry Stevenson and Sylvia Louise Chambers Stevenson. She was twice married, first to Leonard Carmichael King and second to Frank Summers, both of whom preceded her in death. Four brothers, Ralph Henry, James Ray, William Henry and Raleigh Stevenson, and three sisters, Mary Ann Marshall, Mable Stevenson and Sallie Belle Sharpe, also preceded her in death.
She was a gradate of Morningside High School and while she made her home in Brooklyn, New York, she attended Nursing School. Following her return to Statesville, she attended Mitchell Community College and Gardner Webb University.
She leaves to remember and celebrate her life, two sons, Leonard Carmichael "Jackie" King, Jr. of Statesville and Ancil (Kathy) Murray of Troutman; two daughters, Marlene King Smith of the home and Maurene King Davidson of Statesville; one brother, Billy Stevenson of Statesville; five sisters, Louise Randall, Mildred Allison, Linda (Willie) Mattox and Brenda (William) Clinding, all of Statesville and Virginia Harris of Charlotte; nine grandchildren, Fallon C. Smith of Statesville, Dawn M. Gardner of Raleigh, Marinda E. Smith of Mooresville, Leonard C. King, III of Charlotte, Pernell Brown, Davin King, Johnathan King, Myla KIng and Lala King, all of Statesville; four great grandchildren, Queniya Steele, Jakalie Smith, Faith Geter and Rhian Ellis; a host of borthers-in-law inlcuding Jeff King of Barbados; a niece whom she reared, Sharon D. "Pooh" Sharpe; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.
Celebration of Life Services will be conducted Saturday, May 27, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. at The First Baptist Church, Garfield Street, Statesville, N. C. Rev. J. W. Brunson, Pastor will officiate and Rev. Dr. Gregory K. Moss, Sr., will eulogize. Burial will follow in the Belmont Cemetery.
Mrs. Summers will remain at Rutledge and Bigham Funeral Home until taken to the church to lie in state at 12:00 noon. Members of the family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 until 1:00 p.m. at the church, but will assemble at the residence at other times.
